![]() Our October 8 membership meeting was so very special. It was my pleasure to introduce David R. Barrett, President/CEO with Barrett Capital Management, LLCto the chapter as our Special Guest for the evening. Dave is a great leader and storyteller, and he shared with us three ideas for success. First, get a mentor. Get a mentor at work, in EWI, in life. In EWI, we can all agree with this statement. There is no better time to be in EWI than right now! In this differenteconomy, we really need each other, we need to learn from each other, we need to network with our member firms, and we need to strengthen these connections. (That's coming!) Second, get organized! Dave Barrett conveyed if you want to get things done, get organized. He went on to explain how taking time out of our busy/hectic days to review, set goals, and set an appointment with ourselves to get these accomplished. Dave told us how another mentor; Dr. Harris broke down his yearly goals into quarterly goals, monthly goals, weekly goals, and daily goals. Each night before he went to bed. Dr. Harris (and Dave Barrett) would review and see what he needed to accomplish the next day to keep on track. It is such a great reminder to us all. It takes time to get organized and it takes time to stay organized. Third, get out of the boat! Dave shared a story that if you want to walk on water...you got to get out of the boat! Take a chance, get out of your comfort zone, and grow! July, Dave Barrett attended our ASIST night. He shared that our scholarship recipients, got out of the boat. They are going back to school to grow and change their situation. We can all learn and be encouraged from that story! Endless Opportunities! This is our theme for 2009-2010. We started our new chapter year with a FABULOUS Reading Rally! Kelly Kerr, representing VCU, hit a HOME RUN! Kelly is so passionate about our literacy program and it shows! Thank you Kelly for your hard work and dedication for putting together such a great program. AND - Kelly Kerr has lined up that we can have the Reading Rally at The Scott House every year!!!!!! Oh-did I mention we ate cake! November 12, 2009 is our Annual Membership Retreat. I have been referring to this our Brainstorming session. We are going to do things a little different this year and I think this will be a lot of FUN! Let's focus on the endless opportunities that our chapter has to offer to each other, to our firms, and to the community. Remember earlier when I wrote (That's coming!). We are going to start a new chapter connection. We all have a story to tell. We reviewed Mark Johnson's story how he created "Stand By Me" from musicians all over the world. I want to know your story. How did you learn about EWI? Why did you join EWI? How do you want to grow this year? Next year? What does your Member Firm do? What do you do at your Member Firm? How can EWI help you? Our Mission Statement is: EWI brings together key individuals from diverse businesses for the purpose of promoting member firms, enhancing personal and professional development, and encouraging community involvement. Put your thinking cap on, jot down some ideas, and I will see you on November 12! Christine M. Slate EWI of Richmond, Representing Barrett Capital Management, LLC President 2009-2010
