Greetings EWI of Richmond - cslate

We have so much to be thankful...

In July and August, I am thankful that I have air conditioning. Something we may take for granted until the heat wave of summer comes rushing in weeks early. I am thankful for Dominion Resources for keeping the electricity going for us to have air conditioning, but mostly to their wonderful venue and hospitality for our ASIST Event! The James River is stunning! I never tire of this lovely view.

Thursday, July 8 marked out annual ASIST night. the Adult Students in Scholastic Transition (ASIST) Awards Ceremony was another stellar event. A big thank you to Judy Harris and Viki Frankenburger, ASIST Co-Chairs, for putting together a wonderful evening. I am thankful for all the Member Firms and the Representatives that volunteer their time and talent to continue to make this chapter and this organization a beacon of light in the community.

One of my favorite inspiring quotes from Eleanor Roosevelt is, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." We met a group of adults that truly believe in the beauty of their dreams and they are working hardto make those dreams come true.  As with each year, there are moments when there is not a dry eye in the room. This is reality. We have men and women in our community that are doing whatever it takes to succeed. One step at a time, one day at a time, one season at at time, one semester at a time. They inspire me! Our keynote speaker, Cherise James-Cobb, a previous ASIST winner, gave encouraging words for all to hear about her educational journey. "...Hold on even if you have to hold on by your finger tips, hold on."

ASIST nights are a sweet reminder that we are called to give back in time, talent, and treasure! You know who else gives back? Dominion Resources! During our welcome, David Christian, CEO of Dominion Generation, recognized EWI of Richmond with a generous donation toward our future ASIST Scholarships. WOW! Thank you Dominion Resources and Dominion Foundation for partnering with EWI of Richmond!

This year I was privileged to make a special announcement during our July meeting. The EWI of Richmond Board voted unanimously that our ASIST Winner chosen as our corporate nominee each year would be named the "Thomas N. Chewning Award". This award will continue as long as the Richmond Chapter participates in the corporate ASIST program. A big thank you to Mr. Chewning for being our EWI cheerleader. The 2010 Thanks N. Chewning award winner was Raven Phillips-Lee. congratulations Raven. We are so proud of you!

lcam-2010_logo_1281644527Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting (LCAM) is less than two months away. I am looking forward to meeting and hearing from John Wagner, the Hallmark artist that created the beloved Maxine.  This is guaranteed to be an engaging and witty educational session. It's not too late to sign up! There are many other educational guest speakers. Please go to the Corporate Website, www.ewiconnect.com, to see the latest agenda.

August and September are very exciting months and you don't want to miss it. During the August Membership Meeting, we will officially unveil our new EWI of Richmond Website. Our own Publication Director, Melissa Martin, will walk us through the ins and outs of our website and how to navigate through all of our information! Have you been around EWI for several years or are you brand new? Don't you worry...we will all be on the same page with a special presentation from our own Viki Frakenburger, Past Chapter President, and knowledge extraordinaire. As you know, there have been some change made over the past few months from Corporate. Are you up to date? There are also some potential changes coming and we all need to be informed. Please plan on attending this informational meeting. We will also discuss and present the new Board positions and our chapter's future goals and dreams.

Looking ahead, I know it is not until September, but I am already looking forward to the French Apple pie at Bill's Barbecue for our Firm Night! I am sure there will be an assortment of pies, limeade, and Bill's Famous Barbecue. Thank you Kit Hull, Representative for Bill's Barbecue, and Rhoda Elliott, President of Bill's Barbecue, for having us over for dinner!

I hope you are having a fantastic summer and have the opportunity to take a little time off with family and friends! I am looking forward to seeing you on August 12, at SunTrust!
